And now, for a full understanding of the Renaissance phenomena and Festival ...

ROCHESTER - In days of olde under the Great Chain of Being, every man, beast, and thing had it's place and pecking order.  Stones and dirt at the bottom were bested by plants, then the beasts then beggars, rogues, and vagabonds.  Succeeding them were the classes of peasantry (in their own order) and then the various ranked files of Gentry, Knights, and Nobility.  Then hovered the assorted orders of Angels, and above all, God.

Many of these characters will be strutting about in full regalia as part of a three-day extravaganza, The Rochester Renaissance Festival, to be held at The Governor's Inn the entire weekend of October 17 to 19.  The festival has two parts: The Faire during the daytime Saturday and Sunday,  and The Feasts held Friday an Saturday evenings.

Produced by the Inn in association with Lucky Penny Productions, the event casts 35 actors, singers, dancers, and musicians.  Spread out across the gorgeous autumn grounds and gardens of The Governor's Inn, the Fair is designed to be a jaunt back to The Renaissance that the whole family can enjoy  (tickets only $5 and $8).  As guests enter through the gates they will be plunged into another world, with the sights and sounds of medieval merriment.  Elizabeth insults will challenge, drum and flute will resonate, lance and sword will unsheathe.

The faire will offer over two dozen skits, dances, sing-along's and interactive games scheduled throughout the day.  Ticket holders may visit the Thieves' Den or have tea with The Queen as the kids are knighted.   A stop at the Intelligence Symposium will put a smile on any Monty Python fan.  Music will flow with wandering minstrels, fidel playing performances, gypsy and peasant dancing (with audience participation).

For the kids a petting zoo will feature a barnyard of animals and with pony rides available.  Children will also adore Bumbly Phinn the story teller, the Terrible Troll and performances of Robin Hood, Joan of Arc, Tairy Fales (a spoonerism on Cinderella),  One-Eyed Jake, the Princess of Potato, and the Incontinent Princess.

At any time attendees may enjoy a stroll down the medieval Merchants Lane and discover unique hand crafted wares.  All the activity and laughter will build hearty appetites which may be sated with extraordinary cuisine fit for a King in the Food Court.  Feast on BBQ ribs and bratwurst, or try a Barbarian burger with a caramel apple for dessert.  The good Baron Von Stew will be holding Court in the Brew Ha Ha Octoberfest Café offering mead (honeywine), seasonal ales, hard cider and hearty sing -along's.

If all that is not enough the evening will feature King Spaulding Feast.  Join the royal couple and their less than royal entourage in The Ballroom for an evening of feast, flagon and frolic served Renaissance style!  The Feast will be an interactive dinner theatre with singing, sword fighting and silliness all wrapped around a four course meal worthy of royalty.

Tickets for the Renaissance Faire are only $5.00 for children under 12 and $8.00 for all others.  Tickets for the Faire may be purchased in advance or at the gate on the day of the show.  The Renaissance Faire will be open rain or shine from 10:00 am - 5:30 on Sat. Oct. 18 and from 10:00-4:00 pm on Sun. Oct. 19. Tickets for King Spaulding's Feast are only $35.00 (tax and service included) and should be purchased in advance.  Doors open at 5:30 and show time is at 6:30pm.  All tickets can be purchased at The Governor's Inn, 78 Wakefield St. Rochester, NH 03867 (603) 332-0107.  For more information, menus, and photos, visit www.governorsinn.com.
